Never quite fashionable and almost universally derided by “serious” music critics, it’s a genre that simply refuses to go away. And a significant factor in it’s staying power is the heavy metal fan. So, Tom Petty joins his Travelling Wilbury’s bandmates George and Roy, or Nelson and Lefty to give them their proper Wilbury monikers. A sad day, but we all got to go sometime and he has left behind plenty for us to remember him by. Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida in 1950. Bass player, guitarist and vocalist in a number of bands at school, he eventually joined country rock outfit Mudcrutch, aged 17.
